Wooden Hand Plane
A while back I made my daughter a wooden hand plane. She loves it, which made me want one for myself.
I wanted this plane to be something that I'd use often, something that would become a treasured tool in my shop. I had some free curly maple scraps that I'd been holding on to for over a year, waiting for a project just like this one.

Large Chisel Handle
Переглядів 46 тис.8 років тому
I found this large 2" chisel head at a tool swap, and finally got around to making a handle for it. The handle itself is made from tigerwood and a copper ferrule (though, I suppose it should really be 'cuprule', perhaps).
Flush Trim Handplane
Переглядів 52 тис.8 років тому
I often seem to find myself needing to plane a surface even with an adjacent surface. When trimming splines, or edge banding, etc. I saw this in a woodworking magazine about a year ago. If you know what magazine and issue, please let me know and I'll attribute it here.
Celtic Knot Pen
Переглядів 81 тис.8 років тому
I needed to make gifts for a couple of friends, and I'd recently seen The Wood Knight make a celtic knot pen (ua-cam.com/video/ifLP5SJDEoc/v-deo.html) so I thought I'd give it a shot. The inserts are made from layered veneers to give a bit more visual interest. One set of inserts has the light wood on the outside (to be inserted into the dark wood) and the other set has the dark wood on the out...
Reclaimed Wood Segmented Rattle
Переглядів 11 тис.8 років тому
A coworker recently had a little baby girl, and so I thought I'd make a rattle for her. Because it has to be hollowed out I knew I would at least be gluing up two halves, so I figured I'd go all-out and make the head of the rattle completely segmented. It's made of walnut and reclaimed oak floorboards. Alan Stratton on turning a sphere: ua-cam.com/video/n6xG-i5e4Pk/v-deo.html
Flap Sander Fail
Переглядів 11 тис.8 років тому
I tried out an idea I had for a flap sander where replaceable pieces of sandpaper are held in place with a pin. While the mechanism worked well, the sandpaper I used was not stiff enough. I'll see how it works at some point with thicker paper.
Making a Rustic Necklace Rack
Переглядів 9168 років тому
I wanted to make a necklace rack for my sister, and I thought I would give it a shot using as few power tools as possible. I had some firewood that seemed perfect for the project (after making sure to get rid of all the creepy-crawlies). Music: "Succotash" by Silent Partner via the UA-cam Audio Library
Making a Magic Wand
Переглядів 1,7 тис.8 років тому
A while back I was with my daughter at woodcraft when an employee decided she needed a 3' piece of scrap maple to play with as a magic wand. So in this video I turn it into a real magic wand for her to play with.
Making a Segmented Frame for a Mirror

Making a segmented frame for a mirror to match a turned clock I'd previously made. The segments are made out of tigerwood with padauk dowels for decoration. The original turned clock: ua-cam.com/video/kSSqF_iTCqo/v-deo.html Making a segmenting sled: ua-cam.com/video/7tWw9TV_ju4/v-deo.html
Making a Segmenting Sled

Making Threaded Knobs
Переглядів 1,9 тис.9 років тому
I never seem to have enough threaded knobs for shop fixtures and jigs, so I figured I'd show one way to make them. I like this method because they're perfectly centered and balanced. They're also a great way to use up some scraps. While this can be used to make loose knobs, it's best to epoxy in the threaded rod with this style. Check in next week for the project where I put these to good use!
Making a Center Finder

Just a quick video this week after ages of measuring corner to corner to find the center of a workpiece, I finally took a few minutes to make a center-finder. Nothing too fancy or novel, but very useful.
Making a Scrap Wood Garden Toolbox

I had some boards from a failed project that seemed like a good fit for a rustic project like this. We're not big gardeners, but we do have some garden tools we use pretty regularly and I wanted a toolbox to carry them.
Making Bottle Stopper Holders
Переглядів 2,9 тис.9 років тому
Bottle stoppers have a convenient way to hold them while finish dries with a bolt or threaded rod. Here I make some holders so that I can more easily hold turned bottle stoppers to apply finish, and let them dry.

    Those are beautiful pens, but I'm sorry, Boss, it wastoo fast and insufficient explanation. I am glad you didn't have an annoying background drum or music beating me in the head. I do look forward to your next video.

    I get the idea, but it really was too fast to be very helpful. Even with playback slowed to .25 it was way too fast. Shame

    Next time cut out for the tang before gluing the two pieces of wood and expoxy or leave tight and burn for tight fit I'm thinking 2 wood glue right is a stronger handle. Also I let the color little long and fill flush with expoxy. Beautiful build. To many people hasn't worked a double handed chisel. I'm building several.

    Why the angled cut for the wire?

    • @sowiebinich
      @sowiebinich Рік тому

      It's lowest at the back, since it wraps around the metal rod, which is through roughly the middle of the board. However, at the front, it need only come down to a level slightly below the surface to complete a cut. By making the slot angled, we can keep as much material as possible, while still providing space for the wire to move.

    Can you give exact dimensions and names of the inserts you used to make this beautiful finial? Ty

    • @sowiebinich
      @sowiebinich Рік тому

      It's been so long that it's hard to say with any certainty, but as I recall, the insert was from the lamp itself. The previous finial had broken off and been lost, but the threaded portion still remained, so I just used that.

      Unfortunately, I don't have measurements or plans - I gave it to my parents years ago. Ultimately, I just made it big enough to accommodate my specific devices, so if you're going to make one, I'd recommend doing the same.

    I need to make a segmented OVAL frame, 16 3/4" X 13 5/8". I already have my router jig to cut an oval. However, how do I determine how wide the pcs need to be to cut the oval to end up with a 1 3/4" wide frame?

    • @sowiebinich
      @sowiebinich 3 роки тому

      That's a good question - I would probably either sketch it out, or perhaps cut a template out of plywood, and just play around with various segment lengths and angles to make it work. A cursory search doesn't turn up many/any segment planners that support ovals, but there may be one out there.

      I'm not sure which tool you mean. I used a coping saw to cut out the shape, and rasps and files to smooth the curve. I used a blue compass to mark a line a fixed distance from the edges so that I could put a consistent rounding on all the sides.
